18 Jan GST on fresh food?
If you are in Australia you may have heard that the current government wants to add a GST tax to fresh food.
From a public health perspective, this may be unwise. Fresh fruit and vegetables contribute significantly to optimum health. It is commonly considered good policy to reduce the cost of fruit and vegetables and increase prices of unhealthy foods, such as those that contain a lot of fat, salt or sugar.
This is an evidence based strategy to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
To raise the cost of fresh food will put more pressure on producers and make fruit and vegetables less appealing.
It is disappointing that the current government is so out of touch with health promotion principles.
